[ODE] QuadTreedSpace qeustion

I am trying to use the QuadStreeSpace type for collision detection, and I
am trying to figure the best way to setup the space in terms of the
extents and depth parameters.
So the root node defined by the center and extents should cover all
objects in the space right? What heppens if a moving object moves outside
this range?
What are the tradeoffs to consider when adjusting the depth?
