[ODE] Holding bodies like in HL2

To actually "hold" the item, shouldn't a Fixed Joint work, like Michael
tried it before? 
The necessity to continously add forces to the object in order to keep
up with the player seems rather tedious and the "laggy" following motion
might not always be desired.
Somewhere in the documentation is noted, that the Fixed Joint should
only be used for debugging and tests but not for real simulations (or
something along those lines), is that still correct and if so, why is
that? Are there stability problems with the "Fixed Joint"
