I've always found that property of most automake systems to be ugly. 
Your source may be on a CD -- it should still be possible to build it. 
VPATH is a hack, and doesn't actually work right. Make setups in the 
vein of http://www.mindcontrol.org/~hplus/makesample.html do it better, 
and MSVC does it reasonably well, too.
