You could do that, but....

my original comment stands:
Why is the fPIC optional at all?
What platforms should *not* be compiled with fPic ?
Why is 32 bit intel ok without fPIC.
Maybe just by coincidence, ia32 can do without fPIC.
If so... we need to drop the guard.
