[ODE] branches, release, etc

Sorry if that was confusing.  Was trying to provide some feedback from
downstream regarding ODE variants in general - wasn't talking specifics.
The memory of the ODE 0.5 build system is still recent - am still getting
familiar with (and loving) the very welcome shift to autotools.  I'm
grateful.
