Would it make sense to generate and checkin the `configure` script? I
know that it is generally bad form to check in a generated file, but
it would make it easier for new users  (I'm thinking OSX in particular
here) to get up and running.

The Visual Studio build system does something similar: all of the
project files are generated by premake, but I checked them in so you
don't need premake to get started. I just have to be careful to
regenerate them whenever I change the script.
