Yes, I'd read that, but somehow it hadn't sunk in.

Right. So just to clarify, the steps would be something like:
1) Create dBody
2) Create dGeom
3) Create dGeomTransform
4) Attach dGeom to dGeomTransform
5) Attach dGeomTransform to dBody
6) Move dGeom in the opposite direction to the mass I want displaced
7) Use dGeom as the collision primitive
