[ODE] three-body joints

Do you have the wheels represented as ODE bodies too (with their mass and such)? How do you deal with their feedback to the internally-managed system (the axles, differs, gearbox, clutch, engine, pedals)?
For example, if 'something' in the ODE world makes the wheel stop (friction or whatever), do they stop regardless of the torque applied to them from car engine? Or does the engine simply stop, no matter it's current torque output (even if it's <insert really big number here> N-m) ?
(Excuse me if my question is silly, i'm still a newbie to simulated physics and ode in general)
