There is a kind of fudge that will make a body tend to upright-ness. Just
set the center of gravity of the avatar
below its feet. It will then stand up on its own after its been knocked
over.

I had the same problem, except I had a hovercraft that I wanted to "trend"
towards upright-ness. I couldn't get it to behave correctly, until I set the
amotor to the mode where it uses all global reference frames; then it worked
like I wanted. I fed the amotor with a desired position/force dependent on
"actual up" dot "desired up", "desired right" and "desired front".
Applying less force than it takes to right yourself in one frame might make
for more "physical" movement, which I personally tend to prefer over the
flimsy "instant action" method. But that's a taste thing; if you don't like
the taste, then simulating the avatar physically may not be the right
solution for you.
Cheers,
