Oh, I should mention in passing that my ODE tree is not
completely clean and vanilla -- it has some /minor/ fixes
and tweaks, though mainly to the build system.  I don't
think they should be adversely affecting these peculiarities
but if no-one else is seeing this strange problem I'll
retry against a raw CVS HEAD pull. :)
