Like others, I find mailing lists to be much more usable.  I simply 
don't have the time to be visiting web-based forums and checking up on 
them regularly.

If you want a more usable collective memory, why not use the ODE wiki more?

(although, it would be nice if it were linked from the main ODE site, 
unless I'm blind and missed it.)

The wiki has the advantage that it can be updated to contain the most up 
to date answer, not forcing people to follow entire threads and still 
potentially end up with incorrect and/or old information.
