You can see if DRI is actiavated by running "glxinfo" it should=20
come as part of the base xfree86 packages of any distribution.

Once that tells you that direct rendering in enabled you can test
it with some simple examples (e.g. the gl screensavers that come
with xscreensaver).  If that all works, but ODE doesn't, then we
have a problem.
