I use trimesh for terrain, which is just a height mapped surface, not
closed at all. It's hard to guess what could be going wrong.
Can you render triangles using data taken from the tri-mesh? Perhaps your
mesh is actually positioned somewhere other than where you expect it to
be.
Can you put a breakpoint on the collision callback, to see if collisions
are being detected without being properly handled?
