[ODE] Makefile builds tests but DevC++ won't

I've built ODE with mingw32, following the advice of
posts here (THANK YOU!! Yann) But now I have a
problem. The makefile will build the test demos and
they run perfectly, but when I compile them on my own,
with devC++ or command-line gcc, the demos compile but
crash before drawing any objects. I am using exactly
the same commands and switches as is output on my DOS
screen when building with the makefile.

gcc -c -Wall -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -DWIN32
-DdNODEBUG -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math
-I"C:/DEV-CPP/include" -O2 -o test_boxstack.o
test_boxstack.cpp

gcc -o test_boxstack.exe test_boxstack.o
-L"C:/DEV-CPP/lib" -lode.a -ldrawstuff resources.RES
-lComctl32 -luser32 -lkernel32 -lgdi32 -lopengl32
-lglu32 -lstdc++ -lm

The resulting exe will run until I press a key, at
which point it gives an illegal operation
"TEST_BOXSTACK caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:00000003."
 What am I missing??
