here's my suggestion:
i think the simplest thing to do is forget about modeling the hydraulic
elements as separate physical bodies and just use an ODE motor on the
hinge (that connects the 1st and 2nd parts of the digger arm). you can
adjust the motor's velocity and force limit from the hinge angle (based
on simple kinematic calculations) if necessary for added realism.
modeling the hydraulic elements as separate physical bodies will not
necessarily get you added realism, and it will slow things down. just
set the hydraulic elements kinematically.
