[ODE] Problems with Make.

Hello,
    I am having problems building the library using the supplyed make.exe on
WinXP pro even trying to follow Russ's documentation. I'm relativly new to C
and have never had to use make or make files and don't quite understand 

E:\Uni Work\2nd Year\project\physics\ode-0.03>make configure
make: *** No rule to make target `configure'.  Stop.

Would someone be so kind as give me some 'idiot's guide' steps to get the
lib built.
