[ODE] Universal Joint

Hey,
I realize it's must be a lazy lame question, but
could you
describe a few words what a universal joint is?
For simulating a human hip joint I use a ball joint
combined with ALimit joint (as suggested in the ODE
docs).
The result is that I have full range of motion, but I
can
control forces and limits by the three axes
independently.
Is the universal joint something like this?
